Chapter 23

Choose one of the following questions to answer in a complete paragraph (minimum of 3 sentences). Note which question you are responding to.

1. How did Bob Ewell confront Atticus? How did Atticus react? What does Atticus's reaction reveal about his character?

2. What does circumstancial evidence mean in terms of Tom's trial?

3. Why don't Maycomb citizens sit on juries in their town?

4. Why does Scout want to befriend Walter Cunningham now (after learning more about the inner workings of the trial)?

5. What does Aunt Alexandra mean when she says the Cunninghams may be good but are not "our kind of folks"? Do you think that people should mix only with others of the same social class and/or race? Are class/race-divisions good or bad for societies?

4. Scout want to befriend him because she realizes that she should be nicer to other people. But aunt aunt Alexandra sais that she should not befriend him because he is not there kind of people.

5. She means they dont act like they do. They are not good people. They have no manners. They are poor. Scout should not play with him because of this.

#3 They do not want to do jury duty because they are scared if they choose innocent that people will go after them. Then if they choose guilty then the defendent will go after them.

5. Aunt Alexandra means that the Cunninghams are poor and they are not as high on the "social ladder" as the Finch's. I don't think it matters what social class you're in I just hitnk you shcould be able to have whatever friends you want to. They are bad for societys because they divide people and it can cause problems.

#5. I think that when Aunt Alexandra said the Cunninghams weren't "our kind of folks" she was refering to social class. I don't think that people have the right to judge other people because of how much or how little of money they have. So yes i think different classes of people should mix, and yes i think that class/race-divisions are bad for societies under certain circumstances.

#4. Scout wanted to be friends with Walter, because she realizes that she should be nice and not judge other people. Aunt Alexandra doesn't want Scout to be friends with him. She says he is dirty and not like their kind of people.

I think that when Aunt Alexandra said the Cunninghams weren't "our kind of folks" she was saying that they are not in the same social class. People shouldn't judge other people because of the amount of money that they have. I think different classes of people should mix. Yes I think that class/race-divisions are bad for society under certain circumstances.

Question 3.

The reason they don't want to do jury duty because they are scared that if they choose the innocent the other people will go after them. If they choose the guilty then the defendent will go after them.

3. Circumstancial evidence means that no matter what Tom says, he can't do anything. Even with his testimony, the jury thinks he could still be lieing. So Tom basically loses the case because of what the Ewells say.

1. Bob spitt in Atticus's face and told him he was going to get him. Atticus just wiped off his face and went on his way. Atticus said the Bob is all talk.

Bob Ewell spat in Atticus's face, and cursed him. He said that he was going to kill him. He asked Atticus if he was to proud to fight. Atticus told him he was too old to fight.

Bob Ewell's confrontaion was not very proper. Bob had spat in his face and told him he would kill him. Bob also cursed at Atticus. Atticus did nothing back to him revealing that he doen't get mad very quick. Nor does he take threats very seiosly.

1. Bob Ewell came up to Atticus and spat in his face. Atticus didn't get mad at him or punch him or anything. All he said was that he wished Bob didn't chew tobacco. This shows that Atticus is a person who doesn't care what other people think about him. He just lets them do as they please and he is ok with it.

I think ant Alexandra is trying to say that the Cunninghams anrnt high on the soshel latter meaning they dont have varry much mony. I think people can talk to or befriends with who ever they want to be frends with. I think there good for societies because it teaches us that were not al the same.

Bob Ewell confronted Atticus in a manner of rudeness and immaturity. Bob Ewell spat in Atticus's face, cursed him, and told him he was going to kill him. Atticus did not react violently, he simply wiped the spit off and walked on. Thus, revealing calmness, patience, and wisdom about Atticus.

Bob Ewell came up to Atticus and spit in his face and said ugly things to Atticus. Atticus reacted like a gentlemen he did not say anything ugly or rude. What he did or didn't do was what made him a gentlemen he didn't overreact or get all mad and say things that shouldn't be said.

#5. When Alexandra said that, she was saying that they weren't as civil as them. They don't have manners like them and that they don't act like they do. I don't think that other people should mix only with others of the same social class or race because then hardly anybody would be friends. No one would get along and it's just stupid anyways. I think that these divisions are bad for societies because we would always be fighting and stuff like that instead of being one big happy family.
