He was really scared. He didn't want atticus to get killed. He thought is was a gang like the Ku Klux that wanted to get him.

Jem refuses to take Scout home when Atticus tells him to. He is very disobedient. He is scared for his father.

#2 Scout at first was frightened to see all the men that she hadn't seen before. But when a man grabbed Jem and yanked him roughly, Scout kicked him in a place she shouldn't have. Scout finally found a man she knew, Mr. Cunningham, Walter Cunningham's dad, so she struck up a friendly conversation with him. Finally the men left and Scout went home.

1. Jem doesn't want to take Scout home when Atticus tells him to. He didn't listen to his father very well. He is scared that his father might get hurt.

Scout's behavior when she confronts Atticus at the jailhouse and when she meets a mob of hostile men is really calm. She isn't quite sure what all is going on. Thus, she doesn't react as if someone who did know what was going on would react. Her behavior helped to calm the mob of hostile men down.
